What’s all this gbogbo-ti-gbo on Female domination jaga-jaga? Someone should hold me ooo! Because it is doing me like I should shake some tables!
It is sad to see that at an alarming rate, the focus on Gender Equality has shifted from ensuring that everyone is treated fairly, to a sort of new smeh-smeh focus on ‘female domination’.
Disclaimer Notice: The purpose of this rant is for better understanding on where I’m standing. But if you can’t stand under there, causing a misunderstanding and out of context perception of the standing stance…one word for you pele (sorry).
But please eh, just try to understand small.
As a qualified, certified and taxified Diversity Management professional, I have come to discover that there are more focus groups on female domination than there are on PEOPLE empowerment!
I am beginning to see a paradigm shift from male dominated, to a female dominated workplace which is good till it becomes bad.
I even see job descriptions for some roles that are seemingly ‘feminine’, spelling out the preference for ‘only women’ to apply – isn’t that positive discrimination?
Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the efforts of the female empowerment focus groups. As a self-acclaimed feminist myself, I have supported female empowerment advocacy groups through cash and kind over the years.
HOWEVER, the Diversity Manager in me speaks out today!
I have had cases of people asking me how I can be a man and a feminist. I just give them the fresh guy look and tell them that as a matter of fact, I am an #Equalist
Many a times, what has led to a failed system is not the philosophies or ideologies; it is the approach. Educating the girl child is a very necessary approach to fostering equality among genders. The girls need to know they are not any different from the boys.
However, with the way humanity is set up, even if the girls know they are not different from the boys, do the boys who are ‘physically stronger’(this is not subject to finality) know that they are not to consider themselves as superior to girls?
Do they know that it is not right to hit a girl or consider a girl incapable of doing certain things?
Do they know to fairly evaluate capacities and capabilities over gender?
Do male employers know that their female subordinate is as capable as delivering on that task as the male subordinate?
Do the largely male dominated Board of Directors know to give the female the same opportunity to be considered for that executive role?
What about that diligent female who has worked her ass off growing in the ranks?
Do they overlook her determination and capacity and conclude that she will be unable to keep up with the demands of the role because she wears a skirt and has her hair in a bun?
I went to an all-boys secondary school and not one day did some advocacy group or NGO come to run an event to teach me how to grow into a better man and how not to see the female gender as incapable or incompetent to do ‘Men’s Work’.
Meanwhile, a lot of these bodies were visiting our female counterparts in Yaba. Issorite…
I appeal to Female Empowerment groups to take a new approach; set your focus on equality and fairness instead of propping up a female generation that will flip the script and become the dominant gender over the males. If this is the target, then that’s kinda messed up though!
I believe we can have a world of equality where men and women engage in healthy competition without gender as a criterion whatsoever.
God made man and woman equal. It is not about Masculinists or Feminists – it is about Equalists and in Equality, we will Dominate Man and Woman Alike.
