So over the weekend I got in a conversation with a new friend. I had shared joyfully with her about my Salvation and my discovery of the power of the holy spirit; excitedly I mentioned how I had asked the holy spirit to come upon me and how my life changed when I received the holy spirit, how I talked to the Holy Spirit and how exciting the Holy Spirit is, I was so excited sharing about the Holy Spirit I kinda missed the confused and interested look she had put on once I caught it, I stopped!
The next few minutes of our conversation inspired this post.
With a look of Confusion on her face, she then asked me ‘How do I know when I have received the Holy Spirit’ it was at this moment I felt like one of those teachers in High School who had just been asked a difficult question and to avoid embarrassment would answer with a question; and answer with a question I did LOL.
I then her how do you know you are female or your meds are working when you use them for an illness….You just know!
Yes you guessed right it was not enough she looked even more confused and just then the Holy Spirit who btw has the best timing in the whole world laid on my heart to open to Philippians 2:13 (Where my Bible students at????!!!)
“for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.”
The Holy Spirit began to unwrap the whole phenomenon and I went on to share with my new friend.
The Holy Spirit is God himself and the reality of his existence is as real as God himself, as humans our first nature is a sinful one and to be reconciled to God is to receive the holy spirit – I know but that does not answer the question (hold that thought and follow me – Haha i’m beginning to sound like my buddy Jesus)
The Holy Spirit is God’s gift to us all and everyone can receive the Holy Spirit and all you need to do is outlined in John 14 v15-17
“If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
My new friend at this point was amazed to simply find out she can access the Holy Spirit freely and it wasn’t reserved for some Pastors or Bishops but then she still begged for the answer to her question how you’ll know the Holy Spirit lives in you…and I responded you’ll begin to desire to please God refer back to Phil 2v13…because God lives in you and it is by him that you please him your will and deeds will all be channeled towards God’s ultimate pleasure.
So I used the example of the process to getting a fruit for example an Orange, before you get any fruit at all you must first plant a seed and so to plant the seed means to ask for the Holy Spirit in prayer and you’ll receive (Mark 11v34); the next step is to water that seed by continuously studying the word and once you do this the seed germinates and grows and begins to bear fruits, same applies to the Holy Spirit as Gal 5v22-23 clearly points out that the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
Against such things there is no law……not the law of sin and of course not the law of death. When the fruits of the Spirit begin to grow within you, you will receive power over sin and death and will become witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the very ends of the earth aka living a life of righteousness to the uttermost pleasure of God. That’s how you’ll know the Holy Spirit dwells within you.
If the above is difficult for you to relate to, it may be because you are yet to experience the ministry of the Holy Spirit…Hey guess what? You deserve it and all you need to do is to just ask….He’s already waiting for you to do so…
You can say this simple prayer with me….
Dear Father, Thank you for sending your son Jesus to die for me on the cross, shedding his blood that I may be saved. Thank you for sending your powerful spirit to dwell with me and today I ask that you come dwell in my heart as my helper, counselor and friend. I ask this in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen
If you said this prayer well two things have just happened First is that Heaven is rejoicing ‘literally’ and the second is that you’ve just got a new gift – The Holy Spirit yeah that simple ‘Scouts Honor’.
