A continuation of the short story New Beginnings read post here
“Hey Victor what’s up? I just left Brian’s crèche” Tiffany said on the phone as she started to drive out of the parking lot of the prestigious preschool that her only son was enrolled in. They spared no expense in getting the best for their only child Brian and she had made it a habit to spend her lunch period at the crèche almost every day.
Tiffany had wanted to resign from work before she had Brian. Eleven years of waiting for a child made her decide that she definitely wanted to be there for every part of the journey of Brian’s growth. She knew she might not get another child, so she was determined to do her best in bringing up a well-cared for and well behaved child. She had worked for 15 years at her company achieving great feats in her career there, so she also felt she had paid her dues to the company and could totally afford to stop work, with all the investments she had tied up everywhere. With the support from her successful husband they actually could afford to have one parent being the stay at home parent.
The day she made up her mind to turn in her resignation Victor had thought it was a bad idea and he said to her before she left for work that day, “Tiff you do so well there, you are like a star in that company… and I know that job makes you happy. Having kids does not mean your whole life should change, I don’t think you should quit yet but if you decide to resign I would totally support your decision. We are in this together”. Of course she went ahead to drop her letter but her boss and friend George persuaded her not to leave yet. “Take all the time you want Tiff, work from home when you need to. I know you can do this please don’t leave us yet. You are a vital part of our ongoing major project. It’s your baby too; please don’t go yet”. Well her resignation letter was shredded that day and she took almost six months off work and working from home on some days afterwards.
Ten months after having her child she was honestly wishing she had resigned already, Brian was picking up some new habits she wasn’t comfortable with and she knew that he could only have learnt that from other kids at the crèche. He was a smart kid who learned things fast and she wanted him to have a solid foundation as a child. Today Brian seemed a bit more attached to her than he usually was, her sixth sense thought she should pay more attention to that but she thought it was also good to caution herself and draw the line between being careful about Brian’s upbringing and spoiling or over pampering him. So she left him and he was hysterical when she was about to leave, he didn’t want to let go which was very weird because he was quite an independent child. If she didn’t have a meeting for 3pm she probably would have broken her resolve and just taken him with her, she could close for the day at that time anyways.
“I don’t think you would ever get tired of spending your lunch break with Brian, sometimes I get jealous too. When will you sneak into my office during lunch to remind me what a sexy goddess you are” Victor teased. Tiffany laughed “Really? Wow! Well I’m sorry daadaa but if you had let me quit my job when I wanted to, maybe I would be tired of seeing Brian’s face and just maybe it would be the parking lot of your office I would be driving out of right now”. “Oh well, you do a great job being a mum, wife and director at work and I love you so much, I thank God every day for having you in my life” Victor said. “Awwn Vee you making me feel like driving down to your office right now. I see what you are trying to do” Tiffany said with a smirk on her face as she turned to the other lane facing the direction of her office. Victor laughed “Oh I wouldn’t mind that my love… you know what? Let’s do dinner tonight. I can make reservations all you have to do is dress sexy and…..“ No!!!! Tiff screamed over the phone she didn’t want to believe what she was seeing in her rearview mirror.
No! No! No! She screamed as she slammed on her brakes and got out of the car running back towards the creche… tears already welling up in her eyes and her heartbeat racing, she was running back to where her child and future was. She couldn’t think straight, she got to the entrance of the creche but they wouldn’t let her through. MY SON IS IN THERE!!! She screamed but they still wouldn’t let her through, they held her back. She fought hard to go through, she just wanted to be with Brian. She should have left with him fifteen minutes ago when he was crying and holding unto her tightly… her mind was racing, thoughts going through her mind as tears fell freely down her cheeks.
Tiffany was jolted from her thoughts by the vibration of the phone in her hands. It was Victor, she picked up the phone call and looked up at the crèche building as the last part of the building that was still standing crumbled to the ground. She closed her eyes and like a movie the past 10mths of her being a mother replayed in her head, then she finally got to the moment she left him about 15mins ago… Brian’s loud cry as she left him… she opened her eyes and looked at the rumble of what was left of the building. The building had collapsed. “Babe what’s going on?” Victor asked sounding very worried over the phone. She wanted to make out words but she couldn’t at that moment all she could hear was like the sound of a flatline. She had nothing to say really, her life had literally just crumbled right before her eyes. “It’s all over Victor, It’s all over” she said as she collapsed just like the building that had about forty babies in it. The forty children included Brian her only child after 11 years of waiting and nine miscarriages……

Hi! So I’m sorry for the long break but I’m happy to be back. There’s been a bit of personality switch. I dumped the name T.Uzumaki (done with that phase). Please call me TOF! Now as with our usual tradition here are a few questions for us to deliberate on.
- What are your thoughts on Tiffany and Victor’s relationship? They have a new baby and yet they still talk like newlyweds how common is this?
- Tiffany wants to resign from her job, abandon her successful career to take care of her child what are your thoughts on this (Hopefully we get some feminists to comment on this).
- Based on the story do you think Tiffany is just giving a reason to justify over pampering Brian or she really is just being a good mother?
- The care of a baby is the responsibility of which parent?
- What are your thoughts on the ending of the story?
- Do you think Tiffany should have left with Brian when she had that weird feeling? Have you ever felt like that before?
